"Romeo And Juliet" Unearthed In Italy

Postby Clodia on Wed 07 Feb, 2007 6:18 pm

Hi everyone! I am a friend of westsiderny and she asked me to post this news for you to read. She has been left out in the cold by the gremlins that manage this forum and until this problem is corrected, I will be posting for her. She only hopes that this situation won't be similar to what her dear friend Em had to endure just few days before she left this world.

Neolithic Skeletons Locked In Embrace Found Near City In Shakespeare's Famed Play
It could be humanity's oldest story of doomed love.
Archaeologists have unearthed two skeletons from the Neolithic period locked in a tender embrace and buried outside Mantua, just 25 miles south of Verona, the romantic city where Shakespeare set the star-crossed tale of Romeo and Juliet.

Buried between 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, the prehistoric lovers are believed to have been a man and a woman and are thought to have died young, as their teeth were found intact, said Elena Menotti, the archaeologist who led the dig.

Well one of the gremlins who manage this forum has checked Westsiderny's account and cleared the problem already yesterday. Thanks for the new name. I think I'll start a collection now and get rid of my old anyway boring name.

Whoops! No offence intended. Got that expression from the:

It seems that the gremlins have taken over not only here but everywhere else. The human kind is losing its power.

Her lips are sealed, Boots (rather gruesome pun unintended).

Some of the comments after the article were a bit bizarre!

I'd love to know if the two people were related, i.e. could they be brother and sister? And, are the remains actually in situ? Is there any possibility of disturbance in terms of positioning? Actually, you know what? Ignore that and let's get back to the Romeo and Juliet idea - that's a much better story coming up to Valentine's day!

'When did you become a baritone?' replied Caruso.

Your Archaeologist is showing, Michelle. Throw a bucket of ancient soil over it, quickly.

Ah, Sherlock... you might want to hold off on the candles for a bit - unless they're really long-lasting ones...

We tend not to let him near naked flames, Michelle. When we were children, he once accidentally set light to my mother's curtains.

I'm with you on the archaology bit... Be lovely to learn all the details.

Hmm... I think I will have to establish some Hiberno-Italian archaeological links. Then I could make up legitimate (something of a contradiction there, I know) work reasons to go to Italy!

Such an interesting story. Thank you so much for the information and link
Clodia. You have a beautiful name as well. Welcome to the forum, hope you continue to join in.

Renate, you are in no way a germlin or Mr. Hyde. My Husband (who speaks some German) gave me the correct pronunciation of your name, which sounds beautiful.

How is it pronounced, Jacky?

I assumed: "Ren-ar-ter". Is that wrong?

Now the news is all over the world but I think the following article has some new comments from experts (or not?)...

Very interesting reading, Westsiderny.

Thanks for that.

I wonder how much more they will be able to discover, after further tests...?

Is it just a coincidence they were found a week before Valentine's day ?

Well, if the DNA works we should know if they were related, and perhaps get some idea of their ethnic background.

An osteoarchaeologist will examine the bones to identify age and search for clues regarding lifestyle - things like diet, repetitive activities, disease, injury can all leave traces on bones.

Careful examination of the context in which the couple were found might reveal something about their culture - were there other burials nearby? Were any grave goods placed with the burial? Is inhumation the norm for this part of Italy at this time, or is cremation more common? Does this burial stand out in any way from contemporary burials in the area?

A look at the immediate landscape might suggest where the two lived.

These days, excavating something is really only the first step of discovery...

Just wondering if they "hung on" to the discovery for a few weeks....
Just my cynical mind.
