That's awful! A 6.9 magnitude earthquake could kill lots of people, but so far there is only one person dead but almost a couple of hundred injured.

Here are some photos:

Thank you for your consideration for us. There are old wooden houses in that area and many of them were broken. The people still have aftershocks.

We had a terrible earthquake in 1995 in Kobe. Even big buildings and elevated highways collapsed. We lost more than 6400 lives then. Kobe is very close to my hometown Osaka. My friends and relatives were struck by the earthquake. That was the most terrible nightmare in my life here.

I'm glad you and your family were alright, Motoko. The Kobe quake must have been horrible to go through.

By the way, I once met a girl from Osaka when I was studying Italian in Rome (in 1994). She stayed with an Italian lady by the last name of Silvani in a flat with a girl from France, one from Spain and myself. I don't remember the Japanese girl's name, but I'm mentioning this just on the off chance that we have more in common than our love of Bocelli.

Japan is extremely well prepared for earthquakes, and a similar magnitude quake elsewhere in the world would have proved deadly.
But I think that many of the witnesses have aftershocks.
Keep the hope!

Thanks Tesora and Jean-Yves for the kind words. We feel earthquakes several times a year, so we are careful about them. I hope the things will calm down in a few days.

Grazie a tutti, per le buone parole. In Giappone i terremoti sono frequenti.
Una mia amica abita vicino a Wajima, percio sono molto preoccupato per lei.

Grazie mille Francesca e Sam! I and my family are all right as we live far from the earthquake center, though we felt the shock of the earthquake.

And our member Setsuko is fortunately still in Italy after attending the concert of the Teatro del Sileizio! I've just received a postcard from her. :D
