L'opera rappresenta, per me, il Paradiso della musica, il mondo nel quale, i sentimenti, le passioni e le emozioni si trovano finalmente liberi e ci regalano momenti di autentica felicità.

La buona musica sviluppa, in ciascuno di noi, buoni sentimenti e ci fa sentire più buoni. Non è un caso, che Catone Uticense la sconsigliasse proprio ai soldati.

Il mio incontro con l'opera è stato, senza dubbio, un incontro del tutto casuale: ero poco più che un neonato ed è stato amore a prima vista. Da quel giorno, amici e familiari hanno fatto a gara a recarmi dischi di musica operistica. Non avevo ancora dieci anni e già sapevo riconoscere, in pochi istanti, le une dalle altre, tutte le più grandi voci del secolo, così come i ragazzi di oggi riconoscono le stars del rock.

Il Faust è stata una delle ultime opere da me scoperte ed amate. Naturalmente mi sono appassionato prima ai titoli del grande repertorio italiano e solo in seguito ho imparato ad apprezzare la nobiltà e la profondità dell'opera francese.

Dopo le indimenticabili esperienze in Werther e in Carmen, sono stato davvero molto felice di avere l'opportunità di debuttare questo capolavoro di Gounod, che a me ha già regalato molte ore di vera beatitudine, anche, e direi soprattutto, nei giorni di intenso studio, che uno spartito così complesso ha, ovviamente richiesto.

Il Faust è un capolavoro, che richiede all'interprete un'impresa: la trasformazione di un vecchio triste e solo, in un giovane ardente, pieno di vita e di desiderio.

Ho ascoltato molte interpretazioni, dalle più antiche alle più recenti e mi sono sforzato in sommo grado tratteggiare un dottor Faust, che scaturisse interamente dalla mia anima, perché questo soltanto è lo scopo di un lavoro, così carico di difficoltà e di responsabilità.

For me opera is musical heaven, a world in which feelings, passions and emotions are finally released and bring us moments of true happiness.

Good music develops good feelings in each of us and helps us to feel that we are better people. It is not by chance that Cato recommended that soldiers should not listen to music.

My meeting with opera was undoubtedly an entirely chance encounter: I was little more than a babe in arms and it was love at first sight. From that day, friends and family competed to bring me records of opera music. I was not even ten years old and I would already be able to recognize all the greatest voices of that century, telling one from another within minutes, just as kids today know all the rock stars.

Faust was one of the last operas that I discovered and loved. I had first fallen for the great Italian operas of course, and only later did I learn to appreciate the nobility and depth of French opera.

Following unforgettable experiences with Werther and Carmen, I was really very glad to have the opportunity to perform in this masterpiece by Gounod, which has already brought me many truly blissful hours, even, and I would say especially, during those days of intense work which were obviously required by such a complex score.

Faust is a masterpiece which requires a lot from an artist: the transformation from a sad and lonely old man into a young man who is passionate, and full of life and desire.

I have listened
to many different versions, from the oldest to the most recent, and I have done my utmost to present a Doctor Faust who springs straight from my soul, because this is the only purpose of a task which is so loaded with difficulties and responsibility.

Die Oper bedeutet für mich das Paradies der Musik, die Welt, in der sich die
Gefühle, die Leidenschaften und die Erregungen endlich frei fühlen und uns
Momente wahren Glückes schenken.

Die gute Musik entwickelt in jedem von uns schöne Gefühle und bewirkt,
dass wir uns als bessere Menschen fühlen. Es ist kein Zufall, dass Cato den
Soldaten gerade von ihr abgeraten hat.

Meine Begegnung mit der Oper, war zweifelsohne völlig zufällig: Ich war
fast noch ein Säugling und es war Liebe auf den ersten Blick. Seit diesem
Tag waren Freunde und Verwandte im Wettstreit mir Platten mit Opernmusik
mitzubringen. Ich war noch nicht einmal zehn Jahre alt, da konnte ich schon
in wenigen Augenblicken alle großen Stimmen des Jahrhunderts erkennen, so
wie die Kinder heutzutage die Rockstars voneinander unterscheiden können.

Faust ist eine der letzten Opern, die ich kennen- und liebengelernt habe.
Natürlich hatte ich mich schon vorher für die Stücke des großartigen
italienischen Repertoires begeistert und erst danach habe ich gelernt, das
Edle und die Tiefe der französischen Oper zu schätzen.

Nach den unvergesslichen Erfahrungen beim Werther und bei der Carmen bin
ich wirklich froh, die Gelegenheit zu haben, in diesem Meisterwerk von
Gounod zu debütieren, was mir schon viele Stunden wahren Glücks gebracht
hat, auch, ich würde sogar sagen, besonders in den Tagen des intensiven
Studiums, die eine solch komplexe Partitur naturgemäß erfordert.

Faust ist ein Meisterwerk, das vom Interpreten eine besondere Leistung
erfordert: Die Verwandlung vom traurigen und einsamen Alten in einen
feurigen Jungen voller Leben und Begehren.

Ich habe viele Interpretationen gehört, von den Ältesten bis hin zu den
Jüngsten und ich strebe an, auf das Bestmögliche einen Doktor Faust zu
vermitteln, der aus dem tiefsten meiner Seele entspringt, weil nur dies der
Zweck einer Arbeit ist, die so mit Schwierigkeit und Verantwortlichkeit
beladen ist

L’opéra représente pour moi, le Paradis de la musique, le monde dans lequel les sentiments, les passions, et les émotions se trouvent finalement libérés et nous offrent des moments de bonheur authentique.

La bonne musique développe en chacun de nous de bons sentiments et nous rend meilleurs. Ce n’est pas un hasard si Caton la déconseillait justement à ses soldats.

Ma rencontre avec l’opéra a été, sans doute, une rencontre tout à fait fortuite : j’étais un peu plus qu’un nouveau-né et l'amour a été immédiat. Depuis ce jour, les amis et la famille ont rivalisé d’efforts pour m’apporter des disques de musique lyrique. Je n’avais pas encore dix ans et je savais déjà reconnaître, en quelques instants les unes des autres, toutes les plus grandes voix du siècle, comme les jeunes d’aujourd’hui reconnaissent les stars du rock.

Faust a été une des dernières oeuvres que j’aie découvertes et aimées. Naturellement je me suis d’abord passionné pour les titres du grand répertoire italien et ensuite seulement j’ai appris à apprécier la noblesse et la profondeur de l’opéra français.

Après les inoubliables expériences dans Werther et Carmen, j’ai été vraiment très heureux d’avoir l’opportunité de débuter ce chef d’oeuvre de Gounod, qui m’a déjà offert beaucoup d’heures de béatitude vraie, même, et je dirais surtout, pendant les jours d’étude intense qu’une partition si complexe a, évidemment, demandé.

Faust est un chef d’oeuvre qui demande à l’interprète une entreprise : la transformation d’un vieux triste et seul en un jeune ardent, plein de vie et de désir.

J’ai écouté beaucoup d’interprétations, des plus anciennes aux plus récentes et je me suis efforcé au plus haut point d’esquisser un docteur Faust qui jaillit entièrement de mon âme, parce que cela seulement est le but d’un travail, si chargé de difficultés et de responsabilité.

Caro Andrea,
anch'io sono quasi nata e cresciuta con l'opera. Mio padre era un'amante specialmente delle opere di Richard Wagner ed io sentivo già in culla p.e. la Valkiria e molte altre opere.

L'amore per l'opera mi è seguito per tutta la vita ed ho frequentato la nostra Staatsoper almeno una volta la settimana. Durante la guerra mondiale, quando la Staatsoper fu distrutta, abbiamo avuto il più piccolo "Theater an der Wien" come teatro alternativo di cui ho anche dei bellissimi ricordi.

Ero talmente interessata all'opera e alla musica classica - non ascoltavo quasi mai musica pop. Così è successo che sentivo il tuo "Con te partirò" per la prima volta solo a Seefeld, in questo concerto invernale e fredissimo all'aperto nelle nostre montagne tirolesi in dicembre 1997. Credo che io sia stata l'ultima al mondo di sentire questa canzone...

Grazie del tuo messaggio. Non vedo l'ora di vederti nei panni di FAUST, un'opera che mi piace moltissimo e che ho visto alcuni mesi fa a Vienna von Alagna e sua moglie Gheorghiu.

Unfortunately, I won't be there to listen to your rendition of my favorite aria in this opera: Salut! demeure chaste et pure, from Act III, but I am sure you will make it unforgettable for the people that will hear it for the first time. I love opera for the same reasons you do, although I don't consider myself an expert. I live close to the Met and I like to treat myself with some of my favorite operas as many times as possible, that's all. I don't mind watching them from the Standing Room. Caro Andrea,

since my childhood I love classical music and operas. My father has had a passion for that kind of music, he has had a quite good voice, but his parents didn`t allowe him to be a professional singer. So he was singing at home, playing on the piano and we listened discs with classical music very often.
If I want to relax, after stress at work, I listen to that music, and on my iPod which I use on the way to work in the morning or the way home in the evening, I have much classical and operatic pieces (including all of your discs!!), this kind of music makes me quiet, it is something for the soul.

I was 13 years old as I saw my first opera in theatre, it was "Der Rosenkavalier" from Richard Strauss, and it was a great experience.
In the late 1970th and 1980th I went to the opera house once a month, and I saw the whole repertoire from Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Mozart and..and...
And I have heard all the well-known singers of that time. The last years I went less into the theatre, out of lack of time also out of comfort! But just last Sunday I saw "Das Rheingold" from Wagner.
In 1985 I saw Gounods "Faust" with Neil Shicoff, but I must say, after more than 20 years I don`t remember it very much.

So I am very excited to hear and see you next week in Palermo as Dr. Faust...I am looking forward very much!

Dear Andrea , I saw Faust in 1959 at the Old New Orleans Opera House . I have always remembered it fondly . Strangely I have no idea who the tenor and soprano were but the Devil 's role was so outstanding ,I recall the bass-baritone perfectly .His name was Norman Treigle and he , along with Placido and Beverly Sills were the "stars" of the New York City Opera . Norman was known for his acting ability as well as his vocality . He was often made fun of because he studied ballet . It was his thought that it would give him a flexibility in his acting and indeed it did .When he was on stage HE was the center of everything ! I think of him when I think of you . You are always the center of what's hapening on stage . This is the biggest compliment , just as much as knowing your voice from any others immediately . Not many tenors have the instant recognization of the voice ,except Pavarotti and what we know of Caruso . What a huge responsibility . I am hoping one day I actually will get to see you in a fully staged opera . Just any one you have done ,would be fine ! You will have to hurry tho',I am not getting any younger and at 80 , I am hoping to see that come to pass , before I go join Luciano ! You will be wonderful in this role and if all else fails I WILL be concentrating on Faust instead of the Devil ! I look forward to the release of this CD if no DVD is forthcoming .Thank you so much for the 15 years of grand memories ,concerts and the wonder of hearing your voice grow . E' sempre una bellissima emozione leggere i Suoi messaggi. Sono davvero felice che Lei mi stia contagiando cosi' tanto perche' sono senza dubbio molto piu' serena e felice.

Il Suo modo di interpretare i personaggi e' davvero fantastico ecco perche' ci sto davvero male quando Lei fa la parte di chi muore o chi piange e gioisco tantissimo quando canta tutto beato e felice.

La Sua voce e' come il sole per me perche' mi fa proprio lo stesso effetto. Quando ho la fortuna di essere al sole ed ascoltare Lei mi sento in un paradiso pieno d'amore e dolcezza.

Mi piace tantissimo anche il Suo modo di muoversi sul palco perche' e' sempre molto elegante, fine e mi tasmette tanta calma e sicurezza.

E' molto evidente che Lei da' tutto se stesso quando lavora e se tutti fossero professionali come Lei questo mondo sarebbe un vero paradiso!
